After making Aadhar mandatory for filing IT returns, the government is planning to link driving licences with Aadhaar.
Aadhaar linkages have so far helped the government save Rs 57,000 crore, Ravishankar Prasad, Minister, Information Technology quoted as saying.
The move expected to prevent the issuance of multiple licences, criminal offences or a fake identity.
Meanwhile, the government notified on Monday that PAN card will be cancelled if not linked with their Aadhaar number within August 31.
Earlier, the government extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) till August 5.
However, this move was challenged in the Supreme Court who later said that those citizens who are already in possession of their Aadhaar numbers must link it with their PANs while those who do not have Aadhaar numbers need not.
“Those who possess an Aadhaar card must link it to their Permanent Account Number (PAN) card and those who have enrolled and not yet got their Aadhaar card are also exempted from mandatory linkage and the penalizing invalidation of their PANs if they don’t link it,” the court said.
